    bad thumb = no 360

    Right when I'm REALLY getting into Winning Eleven PES 2007 and Halo 2 (gearing up for Halo 3) a HUGE monkey wrench is thrown into the works.  Somehow I've managed to injure my left thumb and I have to keep it nearly immobile for a few weeks. The good thing is that my right hand is perfectly fine so I can still play Wii sports and use my PC mouse for Civ 4.

    Football break

    OMG, there has been a LOT football (no, not american rugby) going on this summer. So far I've watched a good part of 3 tournaments since June, the Gold Cup, Copa America, and the U20 World Cup.  Now this week the MLS/Mexican get together called "SuperLiga" is about to start.  OK, I love football and all but I need a break so I'll sit this one out and watch the highlights on Fox Soccer Report.   The EPL will begin on August 11 so I will have plenty of high quality football to watch 9 months.  I just hope that Manchester United can get this whole Carlos Tevez deal done by then.

    Thank you Microsoft for the Wii.

    I don't know about you, but sometimes being associated with Microsoft really pays off.  Last year at TechEd 2005 I won 2 Motorola MPx220 Windows Mobile smartphones.  Now, just for working through some virtual labs for the Compact Framework and filling out the surveys I was entered into a won an XBox 360 (not the gimped tard pack either).  Seeing that I already have 360 I sold it to my brother and bought.... a Nintendo Wii (and a copy of Splinter Cell Double Agent for the 360).  Now I am set for next gen gaming.  Sorry Sony, but I'll be loving my Wii60 for the forseeable future.

    UML

        Now that I have some Compact Framework experience under my belt it's time to learn something new.  I've been putting this off for a while but now my job requires that learn UML.  It's more design and planning then programming, but it does help you learn how to take your time and plan your steps before you just start slapping code together.  I've found this free tool that works pretty well called Visual Paradigm for UML Community Edition (http://www.visual-paradigm.com/product/vpuml/).  It let's you create UML diagrams in Visual Studio like environment.  The book I'm using is Sam's Teach Yourself UML is 24 hours.  I'm not the fastest reader in the world, and I like to work through example while I learn so it will take me more than 24 hours.    Anyway, back to studying.

    Compact Framework 2.0 and SQL Server 2005 Mobile

        I'm starting a new project that requires development on Windows Mobile 2005 handhelds.  I've never done handheld development before so I'm kind of excited to do this.  Since there seems to be no printed material on the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 I had to order some older books, figuring the main ideas and concepts will be the same. 
        I did find some really good webcasts by Jim Wilson (http://pluralsight.com/blogs/jimw)
    that deals with developing mobile apps with SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Everywhere.  These webcast have been VERY helpful when it comes to understanding how mobile app development works, how different it is from normal WinForm development, and some great tips on performance (mainly using ResultSets instead on DataSets).  I highly recommend these to anyone interested in Mobile Development with Visual Studio 2005.
